2010 GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN FAMILY

PRACTICE DERMATOLOGY

OBJECTIVE
 
The Graduate Diploma in Family Practice Dermatology, a joint programme offered by the Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) and the National Skin Centre (NSC) aims to equip Medical Officers or General Practitioners (both locals and overseas) with the knowledge and skills to deal with skin diseases at a primary care level.
 
INTAKE DATE AND DURATION
 
The course is conducted once yearly and it will commence from approximately January till end November (subject to change).
 
ELIGIBILITY
 
·                     Medical Officers or General Practitioners with a recognized MBBS degree (or equivalent)
·                     Minimum 5 years general clinical experience (post-housemanship)
·                     TOEFL Requirement: Applicants whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not English must submit TOEFL scores as evidence of their proficiency in the English Language. Exemptions will be given to applicants with distinctions in the Cambridge GCE ‘O’ level examination English Language Paper 1119. The minimum TOEFL score required is 580
·                     Other qualifications and experience which may be assessed as equivalent by DGMS and NSC
 
CME POINTS
 
44 CME points will be awarded to doctors registered under the Singapore Medical Council (SMC). The number of points to be awarded will be subject to the discretion of SMC.
 
COURSE STRUCTURE
 
·                     ORIENTATION
There is a one-day Orientation usually scheduled in the period of January for participants. It is NOT compulsory but strongly encouraged for participants to attend the Orientation.
 
·                     DISTANCE-LEARNING (MODULE HANDOUTS AND ASSIGNMENTS)
The course is conducted on a distance-learning format and consists of 5 modules. It is compulsory that participants complete and pass a Module assignment at the end of each module before he/ she is allowed to proceed to the next module. The main topic areas are as follows:
 
Module 1       -        Introduction to Dermatology and Common Skin Conditions In Family Practice
Module 2       -        Dermatitis And Drug Eruptions
Module 3       -        Infective, Pigmentary, Blistering and Neoplastic Skin Diseases and Common Skin
                             Diseases In Children and the Elderly
            Module 4       -        Regional Dermatology and Principles of Dermatologic Surgery
            Module 5       -        The Skin In Systemic Disease
 


ONE-WEEK CLINICAL ATTACHMENT AND SLIDES QUIZ TEST (SQT)

There will be a one-week Clinical Attachment held at the NSC, followed by a Slides Quiz Test (SQT). It is 
NOT compulsory but strongly encouraged for participants to attend the Clinical Attachment. It is compulsory for participants to attempt and pass the SQT at the end of the Clinical Attachment in order to be eligible for the Final Examination.

 
TRAINING SEMINAR

The Training Seminar will be conducted for eligible candidates as a revision course prior to the Final Examination and it will be held at NSC. It is NOT compulsory but strongly encouraged for participants to attend the Training Seminar.
 
FINAL EXAMINATION
 
Participants must pass all the Module assignments and Slides Quiz Test (conducted at the end of the Clinical Attachment) before he/ she is allowed to proceed to the Final Examination. The Final Examination will consist of an MCQ, Slide Quiz Test and Viva examination.
 
He/ she must also attempt and pass all the sections within 3-years of starting the course in order to be awarded the Graduate Diploma. If the participant fails to pass the course/ examination within 3-years of his/ her commencement of the course, he/she must repeat the entire course. The candidature will automatically lapse should the participant fail to complete his/ her course/ exam within 3-years.
 
The candidate who is unsuccessful at the examination must sit the next immediate examination with payment of the re-examination fee. The re-examination fee is chargeable at S$200.00 payable to NSC directly.

Cheques should be crossed and made payable to the “National University of Singapore”. An official receipt of payment will be issued upon receipt of your fees.
 
APPLICATION AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS TO SUBMIT
 
·                     2 Passort sized photo
·                    Application form (Attainable from DGMS’S Office or downloadable from the DGMS website http://www.med.nus.edu.sg
·                     Application fee S$40.00 (Non refundable)
·                     MBBS Certificate (certified true copy)
·                     At least 2 Testimonials from direct Heads of Departments / Supervisors
·                     TOEFL Score (certified true copy, where applicable)
·                     Certificates of any other qualifications (certified true copy, where applicable)
 
 
All supporting documents, as stated above, and an application fee of S$40 (non-refundable), must be submitted together with the application form to DGMS at the point of application. All applications that are late, incomplete or without fee payment will not be processed and will be returned to sender.
 
It is a university regulation that applicants cannot be concurrently registered for more than one course in an academic year. DGMS is not obliged to provide reasons for unsuccessful applications. Other respective rules/ regulations of DGMS will apply.

 DEFERMENT

 If a candidate needs to defer his course/ exam, he/ she must write in officially to DGMS citing the reason and the request will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The maximum period for completing the course is over a 3-years period. The candidature will automatically lapse should the candidate fail to complete his course/ exam within 3-years.

 
WITHDRAWAL

 Notice of withdrawal from the course must be given in writing to DGMS. A partial fee refund (less S$40 application and S$53.50 registration fees) will be accorded if withdrawal notification is received at least 4 WEEKS before the course commences. The S$40 application fee will not be refunded for unsuccessful applicants. Applicants who withdraw after the course commences will not receive a refund. Original receipt for fee paid must be submitted together with the withdrawal notification.
